Return of the Sacred Salmon
Every October we celebrate the return of the Salmon from the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean to the rivers and streams in our community. They come to spawn and die, and are dependent on man for two things: to have their remaining habitat protected and undisturbed, and to help increase the struggling population (thanks to human development and destruction of habitat) through hatchery programs.
Although there is a Salmon Festival in our community, in which people are encouraged to visit the hatchery and learn about the salmon, our family takes it further, with hikes along the rivers to see the spawning salmon up close, reading children's books about the salmon lifecycle, and donating to conservation organizations which work to help restore salmon habitat.
